Health concerns
Water levels nearing electrical outlets, water heater or furnace
Notification by public safety or other official city personnel. Notification will be made through several sources, including local media, City’s Website (www.cedar-rapids.org) and the utilization of the city/county Code Red system (reverse 911 which automatically calls individuals within a specific area)
Safety:
Strongly recommended for citizens to stay out of flooded areas, including creeks, sanitary or storm water manholes.
Flood water could contain bacteria from human and animal sources.
Residents should move all belongings from underground levels to higher ground.
Residents can obtain sandbags 24 hours a day at the City’s Public Works Department, 1201 6th St. SW. Residents who take pre-filled bags may take 10 a piece, and residents are welcome to fill bags for their own use.
Evacuated areas will be monitored by public safety and public works personnel.
Volunteers are asked to help fill sandbags at Public Works. The volunteer operation will operate 24 hours a day until Friday. Interested people should call 286-5555 to sign up for a two-hour shift.
Temporary, earthen levies may be constructed at Time Check and Ellis Boulevard. Materials are being held in reserve for other locations. Once levies are constructed, they will be continually monitored by city personnel.
The water system and supply are safe and Water Pollution Control and Water Treatment facility are taking precautions against damage due to rising water. Some partially treated and dilute sewage is being bypassed from the treatment facility or collection system. More information will be provided as conditions merit.
Animal Shelter closed one week. New animals coming this week will go to KirkwoodCommunity College. Fire Department ferrying shelter employees in twice a day to feed and care for the animals. For animals that need to be sheltered this week, call 848-7373. Do have contingency plans if the water goes higher than expected.
Brush from Sunday night’s storm should be cut and tied into 3’ lengths. Regular procedures for brush pick-up will be utilized.
Most city resources will be devoted to flood preparation and response; therefore citizens should be aware regular road construction and routine maintenance procedures may be delayed.
City has worked diligently in the last 48 hours to enact flood response procedures. We are also working with other local agencies. Chief Havlik is representing the City of Cedar Rapids at the LinnCountyEmergencyOperationsCenter which was activated at 2 p.m. Monday.

The City of Cedar Rapids has set up a 24-hour non-emergency help line to assist citizens who have questions or concerns related to the potential for flooding on the Cedar River. Citizens are invited to call (319) 286-5770.
The Help Line is being staffed at the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
Citizens with emergencies should continue to dial 911.
